A Contrastive Acoustic-Phonetic Analysis of Slovenian and English Diphthongs
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper aims to narrow the gap between specific and general language theory by initiating contrastive acoustic-phonetic research of Slovenian and English diphthongs. Our ultimate goal is to investigate acoustic-phonetic similarities of the diphthongs across languages in the context of possible portability of resources between the languages. In general, the paper addresses the possibility of using language resources of well-resourced languages to efficiently bootstrap the human language technologies (HLT) of the underresourced language. Therefore, as initial step we performed the contrastive analysis using English as an example "donor" language that is well researched with extensive language resources and Slovenian, the official and widely used language of Slovenia that is challenged by the significant lack of resources such as spoken, written or multimedia language corpora. ✷ Young Investigator supported by the MŠZŠ of the Republic of Slovenia and Socrates/Erasmus exchange student under the multilateral agreement UL D-IV-1/99-JM/Kc.

An acoustic phonetic analysis of dip
This paper describes the acoustic phonetic properties of diphthongs in Ningbo Chinese. Data from 20 speakers indicate that (1) falling diphthongs have both onset and offset steady states while rising diphthongs only have steady states on the offset element; (2) both falling and rising diphthongs begin from an onset frequency area close to their target vowels, but only the normal-length rising d...

to provide an objective phonetic description of vowels and diphthongs of Indian English in acoustic terms and to provide acoustic evidence of sound change in English in language contact situation. This of course would have implications in ESL in India, as knowledge about the vowel space and vowel qualities produced by speakers in India can help us in teaching spoken English to the student...
متن کاملction of diphthongs
This paper examines the cross-linguistic phonetic interactions in the production of diphthongs by French-English bilingual children. The study aims to investigate (1) bye) and French tautosyllabic vowel-glide combinations (e.g. /aj/ as in baille onetic implementations, and if so, (2) whether bilingual children maintain two separate categories. Using SSANOVA to compare formant contours, the resu...
متن کاملEffects of consonantal voicing on English diphthongs: a comparison of L1 and L2 production
An acoustic comparison was made between native and non-native English diphthongs. We focused on the extent to which diphthong duration varied due to post-vocalic voicing. Talkers recorded three types of diphthongs /aΙ, eΙ, oΥ/ in /CVC/, /CVnC/ and /CVC↔/ words in which the second C contrasted in voicing. The major difference between the talker groups was found for the diphthongs in /CVC/ and /C...
متن کاملAcoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels
This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...
